Laundry Tales

“These are all true facts about my working life in the Co-op Laundry, some bad, some good and they may not be in the order in which they happened. I did almost forty five years of work there in two spells.” Barrie Postle

One of my early jobs had been to transport the girls back and forth from the laundry to the town at lunchtime. Usually all went well but once we did have a little mishap down near the A6.
There was no health and safety in those days and on this particular day I was taking the girls down to the town for their lunch break. My passengers were all sitting on loose chairs, two of which were leaning against the rear doors of the van. On those two seats sat Connie Eaton and Florrie Hales. As we passed Longstaff’s shop the back doors flew open and out the back went the two chairs with Connie and Florrie sitting on them!
The road had just had a rough gravel make-over and Connie slid a distance on her backside but looking in my mirror I could see Florrie was still sitting on her chair in the middle of the road. How she managed that I shall never know! Connie was able to claim compensation for injuries to her bottom!
